ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC) is stepping up to help households in need.
In response to Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) delays, UWTC is partially reopening its 211/ALICE Program to county residents.
“United Way and Human Services Coalition collaborated in 2020 to establish UW/211 ALICE in response to critical needs situations where callers living below a sustainable income did not qualify for other programs,” said UWTC Chief Development and Operating Officer Gail Belokur. “When fully operational, the program assists with rent, utilities, car repairs and insurance, childcare, medical expenses, and home applicants to prepare and store food. Unfortunately, the program funds available were expended and program suspension occurred in late May 2025. Thanks to recent donations, the program can respond quickly to these emergent, current needs.”
HEAP eligible residents residing in Tompkins County who are facing utilities shut off notices and/or need fuel for heating can apply for a one-time payment of up to $500.
“With the continued delays in restoring HEAP funding, reopening the UW/211 ALICE program is timely and necessary to provide for energy and fuel assistance support so families can stay warm,” said UWTC President and CEO Michael Ramos. “UWTC is committed to coming alongside our community members in emergency response as we generate funds to address local financial hardship.”
Since its inception in the Fall of 2022, the ALICE program has made 900 payments totaling over $373,000 in support of people living or working in Tompkins County.
