PREBLE, NY (607NewsNow) — State Police are charging a 17-year-old in Preble.

Troopers say a Cortland County family filed a report in January that fake Facebook and Instagram accounts were being created featuring phony photos of their 16-year-old daughter. According to authorities, AI was used to generate sexually explicit photos based on real pictures of the girl.

The teenage boy who was arrested is charged with misdemeanor unlawful dissemination or publication of an intimate image.

“The New York State Police remind the public that the creation and distribution of manipulated or AI-generated explicit images without consent is a serious criminal offense. These cases can have significant emotional and psychological impacts on victims, particularly when minors are involved,” authorities stated.
