OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) — Crime is affecting construction in Tioga County.

County officials said multiple incidents of theft and vandalism have taken place at emergency communications radio tower sites. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Officials said continued thefts and vandalism could increase costs and “significantly impact” construction timelines. The radio tower infrastructure is being upgraded to enhance emergency medical services and public safety.

“This project is about protecting lives,” Tioga County Director of Emergency Services Corinne Cornelius said. “When firefighters, law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, and emergency managers respond to an incident, reliable communication can make the difference between success and failure. The theft and vandalism of equipment at these sites directly impacts a system designed to improve responder safety and public safety throughout Tioga County. We ask every resident to help us protect this critical investment by reporting suspicious activity and remaining vigilant around project sites.”

Anyone with information about recent incidents is encouraged to call the Tioga County Sheriff’s Office at 607-687-1010.
