ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The Tompkins County Public Library (TCPL) wants to help residents facing food insecurity.

On November 13, the library is hosting a free Food Resource Fair.

In the wake of the loss/delay of SNAP benefits due to the federal government shutdown, community groups will be on hand to connect people with meal support and pantry items. Participating organizations include Food Not Bombs, the Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County, Immaculate Conception Food Pantry, Loaves and Fishes, and the Salvation Army Soup Kitchen.

“Food security is a human right; no one should have to go hungry,” said TCPL Librarian Sasha Raffloer, who is co-organizing the resource fair. “We are lucky that in Ithaca there are quite a few organizations who work hard to make sure our community members have the food they need. It is the role of a public library to meet the needs of the community as well, and right now that means giving a platform to food pantries and meal providers so that everyone knows where they can seek support.”

It’s another example of cooperation from community groups and local entities during the shutdown. Among other initiatives, Tompkins County recently released $50,000 to buy and distribute food to residents, and TCAT is offering free rides to SNAP recipients until benefits are fully restored.

“To those struggling with food insecurity, I would like you to know that there is no judgement at the library, and no shame in needing support,” added Raffloer. “To those fortunate enough to not need food aid at this time, please consider coming to this event to learn more about how you can help provide food resources. At the end of the day, we are here to lift each other up, however we can.”

The food resource fair takes place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 13, at the library, located at 101 East Green Street in Ithaca.
