CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – Municipalities in Cortland County will receive a smaller share of sales tax going forward.

On August 28, lawmakers approved a new agreement that, beginning January 1, 2026, will see the county’s share gradually increase over the next three years, while the town and village share will dip over that time.

Some municipal leaders expressed opposition to the new agreement, claiming flaws in budgeting, creative thinking, and long-term financial planning. Legislator Eugene Waldbauer countered, saying the terms of the current agreement were more favorable than nearly every other county across the state.

The City of Cortland’s share will remain at 18% throughout the new agreement, which runs through 2035.

Agreement Summary

January 1, 2026-December 31, 2026

  • County Share – 57.5%
  • Town & Village Share – 24.5%
  • City Share – 18%

January 1, 2027 – December 31, 2027

  • County Share – 59.5%
  • Town & Village Share – 22.5%
  • City Share – 18%

January 1, 2028 – December 31, 2035

  • County Share – 65.75%
  • Town & Village Share – 16.25%
  • City Share – 18%

The agreement was authorized unanimously.
