Ithaca considers AC requirement for landlords

ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) — Landlords in the City of Ithaca could be required to provide air conditioning.

Sustainability Director Rebecca Evans said the move would improve public health, especially for infants and the elderly. But she said more air conditioning could cause issues.

“We would for sure experience an increase in greenhouse gas emissions,” she said. “That increase in energy use could also result in a really major problem for the grid.”

Evans said another possible downside would be higher rent prices.

The city’s Sustainability & Climate Justice Commission is in the early stages of discussions.
