ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – An EV charging station project at Ithaca College is complete.
On December 11, officials cut the ribbon to mark the culmination of the multi-year “Recharge at IC” initiative, which included the installation of 30 new electric vehicle chargers, bringing the campuswide total to 36.
“With this project, we saw an opportunity to not only accelerate the electrification of our own campus fleet but also to meet a clear community need,” said IC Energy Management and Sustainability Director Scott Doyle. “Access to dependable charging is the number one factor that determines whether people feel confident making the switch to an electric vehicle. This new infrastructure helps remove that barrier for our campus and for the region.”
The project came with a $700,000 price tag, but after private support and rebates, it will only cost the college $100,000. All charging stations are available for public use for up to four hours per session. Charging is being offered at below-residential rates to expand access and encourage adoption:
- DC Fast Charging: $0.30/kWh
- Level 2 Charging: $0.15/kWh
Revenue from charging will be used to support long-term maintenance and future EV infrastructure projects at the college.
Tompkins County Chief Sustainability Officer Terry Carroll says the expansion will help the greater Ithaca area accelerate the journey to electrification.
“Expanding public charging infrastructure at this scale takes real partnership, and we’re grateful to have IC as a leader in that work,” said Carroll. “These stations don’t just serve the campus; they strengthen access for residents across Tompkins County and support the kind of innovation our region needs to meet its climate goals.”
