ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Ithaca is looking to fill a vacancy in its Common Council.

The city is now accepting applications for the remaining seat in the Fourth Ward, after the resignation of Alderperson Patrick Kuehl, who left office earlier this month.

In July, Kuehl announced that he was leaving Ithaca to pursue a Ph.D. in government and public law at the University of Texas at Austin.  The successful candidate, who must reside in the Fourth Ward, will complete Kuehl’s term, which ends in December 2027.

“The Fourth Ward is home to a diverse community with unique needs, including the residents, students, businesses, and property owners who make Collegetown an important part of Ithaca,” said Alderperson Robin Trumble, who holds the other seat in the Fourth Ward. “This appointment is an opportunity to ensure the ward continues to have strong representation on Common Council. I encourage residents who are passionate about serving their neighbors and contributing to the future of our community to apply.”

Applications will be reviewed by a Council Selection Committee, chaired by Mayor Robert Cantelmo and including Alderpersons Robin Trumble and Ducson Nguyen.

“The Fourth Ward deserves continued representation and a transparent appointment process,” said Mayor Cantelmo. “We encourage qualified residents who are committed to public service and community involvement to apply and help shape the future of our city.”

The deadline to apply is September 11, and an appointment date is tentatively scheduled for October 7, though a special meeting could be scheduled sooner. Interested applicants can apply online here.
