Harmful algal blooms remain active on Cayuga Lake despite colder temps

ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Take caution if you’re still hitting the water.

Harmful algal blooms (HAB) remain active on Cayuga Lake. The Community Science Institute received over two dozen reports last week, mostly concentrated in the northern two-thirds of the lake.

Officials say the number of HAB reports has already surpassed 2024’s record high of 127, and blooms could continue for another 6 to 8 weeks or longer, depending on the weather. The blue-green algae contributed to four multi-day swimming closures at Taughannock Falls State Park alone this summer.
