ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – The Hammerstone School in Ithaca is receiving state recognition.

On November 19, Senator Lea Webb presented the carpentry education center with the NYS Senate Empire Award, recognizing the carpentry group’s “groundbreaking work empowering women and non-binary people” through trades education.

According to the Department of Labor, less than 3% of carpenters are women, and Webb says the Hammerstone School’s safe, supportive, and inclusive environment has helped redefine what trades education looks like.

“Hammerstone School is a shining example of how education can be a tool for equity and empowerment,” said Webb.

Classes at the school range from basic carpentry to advanced projects, including tiny houses and interior detailing.

“We love teaching, building, and fostering community,” said Founder and Executive Director of Hammerstone School Maria Klemperer-Johnson. “Being recognized with the Empire Award is a meaningful affirmation of the passion and purpose that drives us.”
