ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Ithaca families will benefit from state support.

On October 15, New York State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie joined Assemblymember Anna Kelles in Ithaca to announce that GIAC is receiving $13 million for renovations at Alex Haley Municipal Pool.

Built in 1993, the funds will be used to bring the facility up to current ADA standards, add new locker rooms, and construct a movable enclosure that will enable year-round swimming.

“This funding is critical in keeping the Alex Haley Municipal Pool safe and accessible for Ithaca’s families,” said Heastie. “These renovations will allow for year-round programming and services, from having a safe gathering space to providing swimming lessons to more people – giving them a lifesaving lifelong skill. I’m glad I could be here today with Assemblymember Kelles to announce this important investment.”

The pool improvements will additionally support 40 jobs. Kelles said renovating the pool has been a top priority, and the funding secures a bright future for the vital community space.
