FREEVILLE, NY (607NewsNow) – A village in Tompkins County is receiving a financial boost from New York State.

On December 19, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that Freeville will get $4.8 million through the state’s water infrastructure improvement grant program.

The work in Freeville is one of 83 projects across the state to receive an award. The money will help fund upgrades at the village wastewater treatment plant to bring it into compliance with its discharge permit.

“New York families should not be burdened by rising water bills and outdated systems,” said Governor Hochul. “With this funding, the State is helping communities take on essential projects without passing unsustainable costs to residents and businesses. These investments will protect public health, support local economies, and help ensure reliable, safe water for years to come.”

All told, the $453 million announced Friday will support over $1.3 billion in water infrastructure upgrades designed to protect drinking water from contaminants, and modernize aging water and sewer systems. The funding is projected to save local ratepayers an estimated $1.1 billion and create 20,000 jobs.
