FREEVILLE, NY (607NewsNow) — The Freeville Fire Department is celebrating Smokey Bear.
In a Facebook post on Sunday, the department wished Smokey a happy birthday. The cartoon bear first appeared on a poster on Aug. 9, 1944.
The department said Smokey has helped generations understand a simple but important message: Only You Can Prevent Wildfires.
