ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Tompkins County has its new highway director.

Nick Ensign has accepted the position after serving in an interim role since the retirement of former director Jeff Smith in late July 2025.

“I’m excited that Nick accepted [the job], and we look forward to working with him and getting stuff done,” said Tompkins County Administrator Korsah Akumfi.

Legislator Greg Mezey says Ensign was heavily endorsed by his peers.

Count Lansing Highway Superintendent Mike Moseley among that group.

“In addition to his deep knowledge and expertise, Nick remains open-minded and seeks to always gain knowledge,” said Moseley. “He frequently engages with his peers, asking insightful questions to gain alternative perspectives. This willingness to learn and consider diverse viewpoints not only enhances his own understanding but also contributes to more well-rounded decision making within his team.”

Ensign is already busy at the helm preparing for the winter and hopes to have the deputy highway director position filled soon, adding that the application window closed on October 16.
