Cortland PD: Beware of zoning permit invoice scam

CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A new scam is going around in Cortland.

Police say someone is impersonating a staff member from the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission and Codes Office.

The perpetrator is sending invoices from an “@usa.com” email address to residents trying to obtain permits for work on their property. The payment is requested via wire transfer.

According to the Cortland Police Department, all city email addresses end in “@Cortland.org,” and the city does not accept wire transfers.

Authorities recommend verifying any invoice you receive, and if you believe it to be fraudulent, call the Cortland Police Department at (607) 753-3001.
