CORNING, NY (607NewsNow) – Election history was made Tuesday in Steuben County.

While many results from this week’s general elections are still being certified across the region, Corning’s mayoral race is settled.

Democrat Pam Walker will lead the city after running unopposed. Walker will be Corning’s first female mayor. She takes over for current Mayor Bill Boland, who is leaving after nearly eight years in office. According to WENY-TV, one of Walker’s primary goals in her first few years is to implement the city’s updated comprehensive plan.

In related news, it’s been a wild week for Syracuse’s mayor-elect, Sharon Owens.

Owens, the Salt City’s current deputy mayor, reportedly captured over 70% of the vote on Tuesday to become Syracuse’s first black mayor in its 177-year history.

In an interview on CBS5, Owens says she received a congratulatory call at 4 a.m. Wednesday from former Vice President Kamala Harris, who said she looks forward to the great things that will happen in Syracuse.
