ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) — On Wednesday, October 2nd, from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM, Cayuga Medical Center will host a vital training session for aspiring winter storm spotters. This free event aims to equip community members with the knowledge needed to assist the National Weather Service (NWS) and local emergency management in reporting winter weather phenomena, including snow, ice, rain, and flooding.

Participants will delve into a range of topics designed to enhance their understanding of winter weather. The session will cover the SKYWARN program, which trains volunteers to provide crucial ground truth reports, enabling forecasters to issue timely warnings to the public. Attendees will learn about various winter weather hazards, including snowstorms, blizzards, lake-effect snow, rainstorms, flooding, and ice storms. The curriculum will also address safety measures, terminology, and effective procedures for reporting winter weather conditions.

The training is open to anyone interested in becoming a SKYWARN weather spotter. Unlike storm chasers, SKYWARN volunteers operate independently of government agencies and focus on gathering and sharing information that can save lives. No prior experience or age requirements are necessary, making this an accessible opportunity for all.
