ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – An Ithaca business is going out on top.

On October 14, the Rashida Sawyer Bakery announced that it will close at the end of the month.

Two days later, Senator Lea Webb presented the Green Street, sweet-treat staple with a New York State Empire Award, which recognizes success and local impact. It’s one of the highest honors given to businesses in New York.

“Rashida Sawyer Bakery represents the very best of what small businesses mean to our community,” said Webb. “Their dedication to quality, inclusivity, and innovation, combined with their deep roots in Ithaca, makes them a source of joy, tradition, and resilience for families across Tompkins County and beyond. It is a privilege to recognize their contributions with the Empire Award.”

The bakery, in operation for six years in the city, the last four at its Green Street location, will remain open through the end of the month.

“We are very thankful for receiving the New York State Empire Award from Senator Lea Webb,” said owner KC Sawyer. “Our bakery was founded on the idea of providing the absolute best tasting desserts, beautiful, decorated cakes, and other delicious treats. The recognition for our woman and minority-owned business is greatly appreciated. We hope that others, regardless of background, are inspired by our story and choose entrepreneurial paths. On behalf of Loraine Rashida Sawyer, and the rest of our family ownership team, we offer our deepest thanks.”

According to the bakery website, Rashida Sawyer began making cakes in the 80s with skills she learned from the Cornell Hotel School and her Southern upbringing. Sawyer baked for local caterers, restaurants, and the old Ben & Jerry’s on Cayuga Street.

She also operated the “Rashida’s Deluxe Baked Goods” at the Ithaca Farmer’s Market with her husband.
