5 teens in deadly Binghamton beating now charged with murder

BINGHAMTON, NY (607NewsNow) — Charges in the beating death of a Binghamton man have been upgraded. 

Police are now saying four teenagers accused in the fatal attack last week are being charged with second-degree murder. They were initially charged with attempted murder. 45-year-old Peter Bennedum died Tuesday, May 5 after he was removed from life support. 

“On May 6th, 2026, an autopsy was completed at United Health Services (UHS) Wilson Medical Center in Johnson City, New York, and the investigation is now being handled as a homicide,” according to the Binghamton Police Department.

Two of the suspects are 14 and the other two are 15. Police have also charged a fifth boy, who’s 13, with second-degree murder.

Bennedum will be buried today at the Greensprings Natural Cemetery Preserve in Newfield. His family is inviting the public to attend at two o’clock.
