VARNA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Varna Volunteer Fire Company (VVCF) is hosting a two-day open house recruiting event this weekend.

It’s part of the Firefighters Association of the State of New York’s RecruitNY initiative.  Nik Danev is VVFC’s Assistant Chief of EMS and Public Information Officer. He tells WHCU what attendees can expect.

Danev, a biologist studying at Cornell University for his PhD in genetics, joined VVCF in January 2021. He says recruiting efforts intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. The department has found some success with Cornell students, but still needs help.

Danev adds that being a volunteer can enrich your life.

The open house happens Saturday, April 22, 2023, and Sunday April 23, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The Varna Volunteer Fire Company is located just off Route 366 on Turkey Hill Road.
