CORTLAND, NY (WHCU) — New highway exit numbers are coming to Cortland County.

The state DOT is changing to a mile-based numbering scheme for exits on I-81. State officials say the project will update existing, sequentially numbered exit signs with signs describing how far you are from your destination. The new numbers are based on distance from the Pennsylvania border.

Senator Lea Webb says the change will help first responders reach distressed drivers more efficiently. Officials say the changes will be completed by the end of the year.
