LANSING, N.Y. (WHCU) – Land, and history, are being preserved in the Town of Lansing.

The Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) has officially acquired 110 acres of lakeshore woodlands and meadows, including the former Cedar View Golf Course, which operated for more than 50 years prior to closing in 2021. The scenic property is lined with old eastern red cedar trees and has several seasonal tributaries to Cayuga Lake.

The Larsen family owned and operated Cedar View for the entirety of its existence, passing the business down generations. The acquisition ensures the land where Cedar View was will not be developed and will remain largely reminiscent of the course.

“We were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with the Larsen family to conserve this special property,” said FLLT Executive Director Andy Zepp. “Together with Bell Station, this site is large enough to have special significance as a habitat for fish and wildlife while also providing outstanding opportunities for outdoor recreation.”

FLLT will work with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to expand the meadows and grassland for migratory songbirds. A number of trees will be carefully taken down to help expand habitats for at-risk bird species. The meadows will additionally be maintained with periodic mowing.

The property is just north of and adjacent to the recently acquired Bell Station property. Both will eventually be turned over to the NYS DEC to be a public wildlife management area featuring 3600 feet of lakeshore and 400 acres of wildlife habitat. The property will be closed to the public until the property improvements are completed.
