Cornett sentenced for role in April Ithaca Commons shooting

ITHACA– An Ithaca man who confessed to shooting another man on the Ithaca Commons earlier this year was sentenced to 12 years in prison on Friday.

22-year old Yakez Cornett was originally arrested in early April after shooting a man he got into an argument with outside the Silky Jones bar. Cornett briefly attempted to flee the scene of the shooting before being recognized and taken into custody by police. He later pleaded guilty to assault and criminal possession of a weapon in April before being indicted on three counts in May.

In addition to the 12-year sentence, Cornett will additionally serve five years of post-release supervision.
