INDIO, CALIFORNIA (WHCU) – There’s a bit of Cornell on display at one of the world’s most popular music and art festivals.

Coachella kicked off over the weekend, and according to the Cornell Chronicle, one of the event’s premier art installations comes courtesy of two Big Red educators; Assistant Professors of Architecture, Art, and Planning Leslie Lok and Sasa Zivkovic.

The piece is called “Monarchs: A House in Six Parts,” and features six towers ranging from 32 to 72 feet high. The team envisioned a functional aspect in addition to a visual one.

“The idea is that each of the concrete bases is occupiable,” said Zivkovic. “They produce moments of shelter or rest and seating. And then the bigger wooden structures produce shading. The sculpture also operates as a kind of place marker or wayfinder in the vast landscape of the festival itself.”
