The Cortland community is mourning the loss of two teenagers killed Friday night in a crash on I-81 in Preble.
State Police say around 7:30 p.m. Friday, 17-year-old Andrea Czimmer of Cortland lost control of her car in the passing lane of I-81 southbound in Preble. Police say her car went into the grassy median and rolled over several times.
Czimmer and 17-year-old Alexis Porter of Cortland both died from injuries sustained in the crash. Police say the front seat passenger, 18-year-old Michael Conlon of Cortland, was hospitalized.
Along with Porter, Czimmer was a Cortland High student, who was also part of a program at Tompkins Cortland Community College.
“We are shocked and saddened by the deaths of Andrea Czimmer and Alexis Porter,” the college said in a statement Saturday. “Andrea was a student in our CollegeNow program and participated in our commencement ceremonies just a day before the accident. She was a sweet young woman with a bright future who made an impression on everyone she interacted with at the College. The entire Tompkins Cortland Community College community extends its sincere sympathies to the families and friends of everyone involved in this tragic accident.”
On Saturday, Cortland Mayor Brian Tobin also offered condolences through Facebook.
“Unfortunately our community is dealing with another tragedy,” Tobin said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and friends. It’s been a disturbing month for the youth in our community, and we need to come together in times of sorrow to support one another. Be a little more kind, a little more patient, and a little more friendly to those you encounter this week. Just because it’s the right thing to do.”
A vigil was held for Czimmer and Porter Saturday night.
Earlier this month, another Cortland High School student, 16-year-old Amie Leland, was found dead in a home in the city. Police say she was killed by a 23-year-old man, who they say had a relationship with Leland.
